#1 Leader par nature

Malgré le fait que Thomas ne soit pas l’aîné de la fraterie, celui-ci se distingue rapidement de ses deux frères, Arthur (l’aîné) et John (le cadet). Plus ambitieux, audacieux et surtout plus réfléchi et discipliné, celui-ci s’impose sans conteste comme le leader du clan Shelby. À la fois torturé et impitoyable, il n’a de volonté que davantage de justice pour sa famille. Son charisme froid, sachant se salir les mains quand il le faut, finira de parachever le portrait du leader magnétique qu’il incarne.

#2 L'élégance à l'anglaise

Le personnage de Thomas Shelby fascine et attise tous les regards. Même si celui-ci est remarquable pour ses valeurs et ses agissements, son look de gangster des années 1920 ne laisse personne indifférent. Costume trois pièces, chemise col-rond, gavroche (contenant la fameuse lame de rasoir), boots et montre à gousset le clan Shelby est toujours tiré à 4 épingles. Leur objectif ? #3 Stratège hors paire

Dès le début de la première saison, nous comprenons que Thomas Shelby aura toujours plusieurs coups d’avance. Cela commence avec le trucage des courses via la mise en scène de la bénédiction d’un cheval par une femme asiatique. Le cheval remporte la course, et ainsi encourage les parieurs à miser davantage, et en plus grand nombre. Une fois que toute la ville ait décidé de miser sur le cheval, Tommy le fera perdre et empochera ainsi un maximum de gains.

#4 Maître des négociations

Thomas Shelby ne négocie pas en position de faiblesse. En difficulté lors de la première saison lorsque l’inspecteur Campbell le décrédibilise auprès de la population, sa tante Polly lui conseille d’entamer les discussions. “On ne marchande pas en position de faiblesse, nous allons contre attaquer avant”, lui répond Tommy. Il décide alors de brûler les portraits du roi devant des journalistes afin d’alerter Churchill sur le mécontentement de la population à Birmingham. Le rapport de force est ainsi inversé lors des prochaines négociations.

#5 Bourreau de travail

Thomas Shelby n’est pas du genre à poser des vacances. Littéralement drogué au travail (et autres substences), il travaille sans relâche pour la réussite de l’entreprise familiale. Et quand il décide de s’accorder enfin un petit peu de temps (à la fin de la dernière saison), celui-ci devient pratiquement fou, rattrapé par ses démons qui ressurgissent. De retour à Birmingham il en conclut que, objectivement, les vacances ne sont pas pour lui.

#6 Ses origines gitanes

La famille Shelby est d’origine gitane, établie à Birmingham depuis plusieurs générations. Même si Tommy est athée, la spiritualité et les croyances gitanes restent omniprésentes au sein de la série. Malgré ce fort encrage familial, les Shelby n’ont de cesse de chercher à redéfinir leur statut. S’élever dans la société en allant conquérir une nouvelle position à laquelle leurs origines ne les avaient pas destinés au départ.

#7 Opportuniste malgré le danger

Plus grand est le risque, plus belle est l’opportunité. Et Thomas Shelby a indéniablement le goût du risque. Lors de la première saison celui-ci découvre une impressionnante cargaison d’armes appartement au gouvernement. Une trouvaille empoisonnée que l’ensemble du clan souhaite se débarrasser avant que celle-ci ne se retourne contre eux. Mais Tommy n’est pas de cet avis. Pour lui ces armes sont un moyen d’accéder à plus de pouvoir, une opportunité de jouer dans la cours des grands. À ce jeu dangereux il risquera sa vie plus d’une fois, mais son habileté à nager parmis les requins lui donnera finalement raison.

#8 Une discipline à toute épreuve

Thomas Shelby est un homme polyvalent et organisé, en témoigne ces multiples activités. Brocker de paris truqués, éleveur de chevaux, racketteur, chef d’industrie, négociateur en période de crise ou encore espion pour le compte du gourvernement. Il endosse toutes les casquettes lui permettant d’accéder à un peu plus de richesse, mais surtout de pouvoir. Pour arriver à ces objectifs il doit donc faire preuve d’une grande discipline de travail. Ajouté à une (légère) tendance à l’alcoolisme, Tommy doit se plier à une discipline de fer pour mener à bien l’ensemble de ses affaires. D’une attitude toujours calme et tempérée c’est bien souvent le laisser-aller au sein de son organisation qui le fait sortir de ses gonds.

#9 Prisonnier de ses démons

Revenu de France avec de nombreuses médailles lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, Tommy est souvent perçu comme un héro. Même s’il sait en tirer profit face à l’inspecteur Campbell (qui lui n’a jamais combattu), il n’en reste pas moins profondément traumatisé par cet épisode de sa vie. Omniprésents, les stigmates de la guerre resurgissent à tout instant. D’abord avec son ami, Danny, atteint d’un stress post-traumatique aigu, puis Arthur dont le comportement peut passer de chien enragé à fêtard euphorique en quelques instants. Mais la guerre à su forger le caractère froid, parfois glacial, qui caractérise Tommy désormais. Et même la mort ne l’effraie plus.

#10 Prêt à mourir

La mort est le sort qui nous attend tous. La seule question est “quand ?”. Dans un mois ? Dans 10 ans ? Demain ? Peut-être même aujourd’hui. Nous la craignons tous. Thomas Shelby, lui, est “déjà mort en France”. Tout ce qui lui arrive ensuite n’est que bonus, un supplément de vie qui lui a été accordé. Certes il est bien décidé à en profiter, mais surtout cela le rend plus résistant face aux coups de ces ennemis. Ces actions, toujours calculées, sont fermes, il n’agit pas par peur. Les risques qu’il prend sont mesurés, mais toujours en pleine conscience des conséquences s’il échoue. Cet aplomb devant la mort qui l’entoure lui donne la force de vivre pleinement la vie à laquelle il aspire.

#1 Leader by nature

Despite the fact that Thomas is not the eldest of the siblings, he quickly stands out from his two brothers, Arthur (the eldest) and John (the younger). It begins with the fixing of the races via the staging of the blessing of a horse by an Asian woman. The horse wins the race, and thus encourages bettors to bet more, and in greater numbers. Once the whole town has decided to bet on the horse, Tommy will make him lose and thus pocket the maximum winnings.

#4 Master of Negotiations

Thomas Shelby does not negotiate from a weak position. In difficulty during the first season when Inspector Campbell discredits him with the population, his aunt Polly advises him to start discussions. “You don’t talk when you’re on the back foot, we’ll strike a blow back first” (“We don’t haggle in a weak position, we’re going to counterattack before”), Tommy replies. He then decided to burn the portraits of the king in front of journalists in order to alert Churchill to the discontent of the population at Birmingham . The balance of power is thus reversed during the next negotiations.

#5 Workaholic

Thomas Shelby is not one to ask for a vacation. Literally drugged at work (and other substances), he works tirelessly for the success of the family business. And when he finally decides to give himself a little time (at the end of the last season), he almost goes mad, overtaken by his resurgent demons. Back in Birmingham he concludes that, objectively, the holidays are not for him.

#6 His gypsy origins

The Shelby family are of gypsy origin, having been established in Birmingham for several generations. Even though Tommy is an atheist, spirituality and gypsy beliefs remain pervasive within the series. Despite this strong family inking, the Shelbys never stop trying to redefine their status. Rise in society by going to conquer a new position to which their origins had not originally intended them.

#7 Opportunistic despite the danger

The greater the risk, the greater the opportunity. And Thomas Shelby undeniably has a taste for risk. During the first season, he discovers an impressive shipment of weapons belonging to the government. A poisoned find that the whole clan wants to get rid of before it turns against them. But Tommy disagrees. For him these weapons are a way to access more power, an opportunity to play in the big leagues. In this dangerous game he will risk his life more than once, but his ability to swim among sharks will finally prove him right.

#8 Unfailing discipline

Thomas Shelby is a versatile and organized man, as evidenced by these multiple activities. Broker of rigged bets, horse breeder, racketeer, industrial leader, negotiator in times of crisis or even a spy on behalf of the government. He wears all the hats allowing him to access a little more wealth, but above all power. To achieve these objectives, he must demonstrate great work discipline. Added to a (slight) tendency to alcoholism, Tommy must bend to an iron discipline to carry out all of his business. #9 Prisoner of his demons

Returned from France with many medals during the First World War , Tommy is often seen as a hero. Even if he knows how to take advantage of it against Inspector Campbell (who has never fought), he is nonetheless deeply traumatized by this episode of his life. Omnipresent, the scars of war reappear at all times. First with his friend, Danny, suffering from acute post-traumatic stress, then Arthur whose behavior can go from mad dog to euphoric party animal in a few moments. But the war knew how to forge the cold, sometimes icy character that now characterizes Tommy. And even death no longer frightens him.

#10 Ready to Die

Death is the fate that awaits us all. The only question is “when?”. In a month ? In 10 years ? Tomorrow ? Maybe even today. We all fear her. Thomas Shelby is “already dead in France”. Everything that happens to him after that is just a bonus, an extra life granted to him.
